Roads represent about 80% of the Group’s business

The Roads business has two branches :

  • Road Construction
  • Production

Road construction

Colas builds and maintains roads, highways, runways and airport parking areas, ports, industrial and logistics hubs, urban roads and developments, public transport tracks and reserved lanes for buses, trams and metros), cycle lanes, motor racing circuits, sport and recreational facilities, etc.

Production

Upstream of constriction and maintenance work, Colas owns major industrial facilities for the production and recycling of construction materials primarily used in road building (aggregate, emulsions, binders and asphalt mixes, ready-mixed concrete).

These industrial activities are backed by a tight-knit international network comprising:

  •  680 quarries and gravel pits
  • 140 emulsion and binder plants
  • 580 asphalt mixing plants
  • 2 bitumen refining plants

In 2011, Colas produced:

  • 101 million metric tons of aggregate (approximately 52 million metric tons for mainland France)
  • 1.6 million metric tons of emulsions and binders (world number 1 emulsion producer)
  • 47 million metric tons of asphalt mix

The Group’s estimated worldwide aggregate reserves are estimated at 2.7 billion metric tons.

Colas operates in the fields of production, storage, transformation and distribution of bitumen notably in Asia, but is currently spotlighting new gateways to other regions.   In France, SRD (Société de la Raffinerie de Dunkerque), which produces 300,000 tons of bitumen each year, was acquired by the Colas Group in June 2010.
